Argumentative Essay Graphic Organizer
Fill it in, then copy, download or print your plan. No account, no limit, and nothing you type leaves your browser — there is no AI behind this page, which is the point.
Fill it in this order, not top to bottom
- Rewrite the question, and name its instruction verb.
- Write the thesis — and the sentence someone who disagreed would say.
- Write the two or three claims as full sentences, with no evidence yet.
- Now go and find the evidence, and fill in the middle line of each reason.
- Write the counterargument and the rebuttal.
- Run the checks at the bottom.
- Write the conclusion last — you cannot say what follows until the argument exists.
1. The question
Before anything else. Rewriting the prompt in your own words is how you notice what it is actually asking.
- The question, in my own words
- The instruction verb, and what it wants
2. My position
One sentence. If nobody could disagree with it, the body paragraphs will have nothing to do.
- My thesis, as one sentence
- Someone who disagreed would say…
3. Reason 1
One claim per paragraph. Write it as a full sentence, not a topic — “economic effects” hides whether the paragraph worked.
- Claim, as a full sentence
- Evidence (source, data, example)
- How that evidence establishes the claim
4. Reason 2
Does this reason need Reason 1 to have happened first? If so, you have found your paragraph order.
- Claim, as a full sentence
- Evidence (source, data, example)
- How that evidence establishes the claim
5. Reason 3 — optional
Leave this empty if you only have two. Two developed reasons beat three thin ones, and the third box is where padding comes from.
- Claim, as a full sentence
- Evidence (source, data, example)
- How that evidence establishes the claim
6. Counterargument and rebuttal
The part that most reliably raises a mark. State the objection as its own advocate would — beating a weak version reads as evasion.
- The strongest objection to my thesis
- Why it does not defeat me
7. Conclusion
Not a summary. The reader finished the argument a minute ago.
- What is now true, given the argument worked
- What my position costs, or leaves unresolved
8. Check before writing prose
Every structural problem in a finished essay is visible here, where it costs a line to fix instead of an evening.
- Does every reason support the thesis? Which does not?
- Are any two reasons actually the same reason?
- Which claim am I least able to evidence?
Frequently asked questions
What is an argumentative essay graphic organizer?
A set of boxes that separates deciding what to argue from writing it in sentences. One box per part of the essay — thesis, each reason with its evidence, the counterargument, the conclusion — each asking the question that part has to answer. Planning and drafting are different kinds of work, and doing both at once is what makes a blank page hard to start.
Is this organizer free, and do I need an account?
It is free and there is no account. Nothing you type is sent anywhere — it stays in your browser, and the copy, download and print buttons all work locally. There is no AI behind this page, which is why there is no sign-in and no usage limit.
Can I print it blank to hand out?
Yes. Press Print without filling anything in and you get the organizer as a worksheet, with each question and a space to write under it. Filling it in first prints your completed plan instead.
What order should I fill in the boxes?
Not top to bottom. Question first, then the thesis, then the claims as full sentences with no evidence yet, then go and find the evidence. Counterargument and checks next, and the conclusion last — you cannot say what follows from an argument before you have made it.
Do I have to use three reasons?
No. The third box is optional and leaving it empty is often the better essay: two developed reasons beat three thin ones, and the third slot is where padding comes from. The number of body paragraphs should come from how many steps your argument has, not from the template.
