Paste your essay, or just your thesis and main points. You get a conclusion that says something the introduction could not.
Why conclusions are the weakest paragraph in most essays
By the time a writer reaches the conclusion they have made their argument, they are near the word limit, and they are tired. The path of least resistance is to restate the thesis, list the three points again, and add a sentence about how the issue is complex. That is what most conclusions are, and a marker reading their fortieth essay notices instantly.
The deeper problem is that a summary conclusion wastes the most valuable position in the essay. The last paragraph is the one the reader finishes on and the one that decides what they take away. Spending it repeating what they just read is a choice to leave that impression to chance.
What a conclusion should actually do
Say what follows. The argument is now established. What is true as a consequence? What should change, or what should a reader now believe that they did not before? This is the single most useful move and the one most often missing.
Name the cost. Every position has a price — something it gives up, a case it handles badly, evidence it cannot yet account for. Naming it is not weakness; it is the mark of someone who has genuinely thought about the counterarguments rather than defeated straw versions of them.
Widen, but only one notch. Connect the argument to the slightly larger question it sits inside. One notch, not five — a conclusion that ends on the human condition has lost the thread.
Land on something concrete. The final sentence should be specific. Abstraction at the end reads as trailing off.
The phrases to delete
"In conclusion" is the clearest one. It tells the reader something the page position already told them, and it is the most reliable single signal of a formulaic essay. The same goes for "to sum up", "all things considered", and "as has been demonstrated".
"Only time will tell" and "further research is needed" are both ways of ending without saying anything. If further research genuinely is needed, say what research and what it would settle — that is a real sentence.
And a conclusion should never open a new line of argument. If something is important enough to appear at the end, it was important enough to have a paragraph of its own.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a conclusion be?
About the same as the introduction — roughly 10% of the essay. Shorter is usually better than longer; a conclusion that runs on is normally still summarising.
Can I include a quotation in my conclusion?
Rarely a good idea. Ending on someone else’s words gives away the last position in the essay, which should be yours. The exception is a short quotation you have already analysed, returned to with new meaning.
Should the conclusion repeat the thesis?
It should confirm the thesis has been earned — usually in a clause, not a sentence — and then move past it. Repeating it verbatim tells the reader you had nothing left to add.
