Free Research Essay Topic Generator

Give it your subject area. You get six narrowed research questions rather than six topic labels, each with what makes it arguable and the kind of evidence you would have to find.

Why topic lists are usually useless

Search for research essay topics and you get a list of a hundred subjects: "climate change", "social media and mental health", "the gig economy". Those are not topics, they are categories, and the reason the list does not help is that the hard part was never finding a subject. It was narrowing one.

An essay fails at the topic stage in one of two ways. Too broad, and you can only skim — a 2,000-word essay on "the history of medicine" produces a summary of things a reader could have got from an encyclopaedia. Too narrow or too obscure, and the sources do not exist, which you discover three days in.

The useful unit is a question with a constraint attached: a time, a place, a population, a mechanism. "Renewable energy" is unwritable. "Why Germany’s solar capacity outgrew its grid between 2010 and 2015" is an essay, and you can tell immediately what you would need to go and read.

It names the evidence, not the sources

Each topic comes with the kind of evidence it would need — court records, national statistics, a particular sort of longitudinal study, archival material. That is deliberately a category rather than a citation.

A model asked for specific sources will produce them, and some of them will not exist: plausible authors, real-sounding journals, convincing page numbers. Sending you to spend an afternoon hunting for a paper that was never written is a worse outcome than saying nothing, so this tool does not do it. What it gives you instead is the search you should run and the sort of thing you are looking for.

That also makes the output testable before you commit. If you cannot find the category of evidence a topic needs in twenty minutes in your library’s catalogue, that topic is not for you, and twenty minutes is a cheap way to find out.

What to pick

Availability of evidence first, interest second. An interesting question with no accessible sources becomes a miserable fortnight; a slightly duller question with a rich archive behind it becomes a good essay, and the interest usually arrives once you are deep enough in.

Check the brief as well. Some modules require a topic to be approved, some restrict you to a reading list, and some set the geographical or chronological range. A topic that breaks the brief is not a topic however good it is.

Frequently asked questions

How do I choose a research essay topic?

Narrow a subject until it is a question with a constraint — a time, a place, a population or a mechanism — and then check that the evidence exists before committing. Availability of sources should decide between your shortlist, not which question sounds most interesting; an interesting question with no accessible evidence is the commonest way a research essay goes wrong.

What makes a good research question?

It is specific enough to answer in the words available, genuinely open rather than settled, and supported by evidence you can actually get hold of. A good test is whether you can say what you would need to read to answer it. If you cannot, the question is still a subject.

Does this tool give me sources?

No, and that is deliberate. It tells you the kind of evidence each topic needs — statistics, court records, a particular sort of study — but never names a specific paper, author or figure. Language models produce convincing references to work that does not exist, and sending you to hunt for one is worse than giving you nothing. Find the sources yourself from the category it names.

Is my topic too broad?

If you could write a book on it, it is too broad for an essay. The practical test at essay length: could someone disagree with your answer, and could you establish it in your word count? If the honest answer is that you would only be able to summarise, add a constraint of time, place or population and ask again.
