Free Essay Title Generator
Tell us what the essay argues. You get ten titles across three registers, so you can pick one that fits your marker rather than one that fits a generator.
What a title is for
A title is the first evidence a marker has about how much thought went into the essay, and it takes about two seconds to read. A title that restates the prompt — "Discuss the Causes of the French Revolution" — signals that the writer treated the assignment as a form to fill in. A title that states a position signals the opposite before the first paragraph is read.
The practical test: could this title sit unchanged on top of any other essay answering the same prompt? If it could, it is a topic label. A good title belongs to your essay specifically, because it names your argument.
The two-part academic title
The colon convention exists for a reason. The first half earns attention with a phrase, an image or a quotation; the second half states the scope precisely so a reader scanning a bibliography knows exactly what the piece covers. "Bread and Circuses: Municipal Entertainment Spending in Late Republican Rome, 80–44 BCE" does both jobs at once.
It becomes a cliché when the first half is generic — "Exploring the Complexities: …" adds nothing. If the first half would work on any paper, cut it and keep the precise half.
Check the brief before you get attached
Some courses require the exact assigned question as the title, and a clever alternative will cost marks. Some style guides specify title case, sentence case, or a word limit. Check the brief first: this is one of the few places where following the instruction beats writing well.
Frequently asked questions
Does my essay need a title?
Most academic work does, unless the brief supplies the question as the title. A short exam answer usually does not. When in doubt, include one — an unnecessary title costs nothing and a missing one can cost marks.
Should essay titles be in title case?
MLA and Chicago use title case; APA uses title case on the title page and sentence case for references. If your course specifies a style, follow it; if not, pick one and be consistent.
Can a title be a question?
Yes, if the essay genuinely answers it. A question the essay only circles is worse than no title at all.
